NMN raw material is usually quoted with a single purity figure, and buyers compare suppliers on that figure and the price. The figure alone says little. It matters which substance was measured, by which method, against which reference material, and whether the powder in the drum is the same chemical form your regulator and your label expect. NMN also has no public pharmacopoeia standard to fall back on, so the supplier’s own specification carries more weight than it does for many other ingredients.
This guide is for supplement and food manufacturers, OEM factories and brands that buy β-nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) as a raw material for their own production. It covers what to put in the specification, how to read the purity line, storage and packing, the documents that come with each lot, and what we could confirm from primary sources about how NMN is treated in Japan and the United States. If you would rather have the finished product made in Japan, see our NMN supplement OEM guide.
Health supplements are foods, not medicines, and are not a substitute for medical treatment. This article is about the raw material and its paperwork; it makes no claim about what NMN does in the body.

Name the exact substance in the specification
Specify β-nicotinamide mononucleotide by name, state whether you need the free form or a salt or other derivative, and ask for the production route, because different materials are sold under the same short name.
“NMN” is a market name. Japanese official documents use the full name β-nicotinamide mononucleotide, and that is the name to put on a purchase specification. Two further points belong in the first lines of the specification:
- Free form or derivative. Related materials, such as a reduced NMN calcium salt, appear as separate ingredient names in regulatory listings. If your label, your formula calculation or your registration assumes the free β-form, say so.
- Production route. Suppliers do not all make NMN the same way. A Japan Customs advance ruling from February 2026, for example, describes a chemically single β-NMN made by microbial culture, followed by impurity removal, filtration, resin adsorption, concentration, crystallisation, drying and milling. Ask which route the supplier uses and whether any processing aids or solvents are used, because the answers feed your allergen file and your residual-solvent checks.
| Specification line | What a usable answer looks like |
|---|---|
| Substance name | β-nicotinamide mononucleotide, free form (or the named salt or derivative) |
| Appearance | Description of colour and physical form |
| Purity or content | Figure, basis (as-is or anhydrous) and the method |
| Identification | Method that confirms the substance, such as a spectrum compared with a reference |
| Related substances | Named impurities with limits, or a total limit, and the method |
| Water or loss on drying | Limit and method |
| Residual solvents | Which solvents are tested, if any are used in production |
| Heavy metals and microbiology | Limits and methods your regulator recognises |
| Packing and storage | Inner bag, outer drum, storage condition |
Reading the purity line
A purity figure means something only with its method, its basis and its reference material; ask for all three, and ask what the specification limits besides the main substance.
There is no monograph for NMN in the Japanese Pharmacopoeia, 19th edition, so no public Japanese method sets the purity figure. Purity is often reported by liquid chromatography, a technique described in general terms in the Japanese Pharmacopoeia as Liquid Chromatography ⟨2.01⟩, but the column, mobile phase, detection and calculation are the supplier’s own. Two specifications that both say “purity by liquid chromatography” may not be measuring the same thing.
Ask these questions before comparing quotations:
- Area percentage or assay against a reference standard? An area percentage tells you how much of what the method detects is the main peak. An assay against a reference standard tells you how much NMN is in the powder by weight. The two figures can differ.
- What reference material is used? If the supplier assays against a reference, ask what it is and how it is qualified.
- Which related substances are limited? Breakdown products and process impurities should be named with limits where the supplier tests for them, not only covered by the main-peak figure.
- As-is or anhydrous basis? A figure on the anhydrous basis is higher than the same material on the as-is basis when the powder holds water.
- Can your laboratory or an outside laboratory reproduce it? If you plan incoming testing, ask for the method summary so your laboratory can set it up before the first lot arrives.
Our certificate of analysis guide shows how to check each CoA result against the specification line it belongs to.
Storage, packing and shelf life
Store and ship NMN as the supplier’s specification directs, keep the inner bag sealed until use, and agree in writing how much shelf life must remain on arrival.
The Japan Customs ruling above describes the material as a white powder, packed 25 kg in two plastic bags inside a fibre drum; other suppliers may pack differently, so ask. The storage condition, including any temperature range and protection from moisture, is set by the supplier and stated on its specification and safety data sheet. Follow it through the whole route: factory, export warehouse, vessel or aircraft, port, bonded warehouse and your own store.
| Point to agree | Why |
|---|---|
| Storage condition on the specification | Decides whether a dry container is enough or temperature control is needed |
| Inner packing and pack size | Opening a large pack many times exposes the remaining powder to moisture |
| Expiry or retest date on the CoA | Your quality system needs to know which one applies |
| Minimum remaining shelf life on arrival | Protects your production schedule; the figure is yours to set |
| Single lot or mixed lots per shipment | Each lot needs its own CoA and packing-list line |
Sample handling follows the same rules as for other raw materials, set out in our guide to buying Japanese raw materials in bulk: test a sample from a known lot against the agreed specification before the first order.

How NMN is treated in different countries
NMN’s status differs by country and has changed over time; we confirmed the position in Japan and one public record in the United States, and for every other market the manufacturer confirms the current rule in the country of use.
| Country | What we confirmed in a primary source | What it does not tell you |
|---|---|---|
| Japan | The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare list of substances not judged to be medicines unless a medicinal effect is claimed names β-nicotinamide mononucleotide (version updated 5 August 2026) | Label wording, amounts, or any status outside Japan |
| Japan (customs) | A Tokyo Customs advance ruling of 27 February 2026 classified a chemically single β-NMN for food and cosmetic raw material use under heading 29.34 | The classification your own customs will apply |
| United States | The Food and Drug Administration’s public list of new dietary ingredient notifications includes a β-NMN notification submitted in November 2025 with an FDA response dated January 2026, and a separate entry for a reduced NMN calcium salt | The outcome, which is in each response letter, or whether a notification covers another supplier’s material |
| Other markets | Not checked here | The manufacturer confirms the current rule in the country of use |
Three cautions follow from the table:
- A Japanese status is a Japanese status. The non-medicine list decides how NMN is treated in Japan only.
- A US notification is specific. A new dietary ingredient notification is filed by a particular company for a particular ingredient. If your US route depends on one, ask whether it covers the material you are buying, and read the FDA response letter. Our NMN supplement OEM guide summarises how the US position has moved.
- Check before the first order, not after. Whether NMN may be used in a food or supplement, at what amount and with what wording, is decided in the country of use. The manufacturer confirms that rule, and the importer handles clearance and any notification. We supply the documents the check depends on.
Documents to expect with each lot
Each NMN lot comes with the specification, a certificate of analysis for that lot, a safety data sheet, and allergen and origin information, with the purity method stated on both the specification and the CoA.
| Document | For NMN, check especially |
|---|---|
| Specification | Full substance name and form, purity figure with method and basis, related-substance limits, residual solvents if used |
| Certificate of analysis | Lot number matching the drum label, each result against its limit, method references, manufacture and expiry or retest dates |
| Safety data sheet | Composition matches the grade ordered; storage and handling |
| Production route and allergen statement | Route, processing aids where disclosed, and a yes or no against your country’s allergen list |
| Origin information | Country where the material was produced and last processed |
| Other certificates if your market asks | Halal, kosher or non-GMO statements naming the product and valid on the shipment date |
Before you ask for a quotation
A supplier can answer quickly and comparably once the substance, the purity method, the quantity, the packing and the country of use are fixed.
- β-NMN free form, or the named derivative
- Purity figure you need, with the method and basis you accept
- Impurity and residual-solvent limits your regulator expects
- Quantity per order and pack size per batch
- Storage and transport condition you can provide
- Country of use, and any certificates your customer asks for
We do not quote a price or a lead time before the specification is agreed. Other single-ingredient guides in this series cover coenzyme Q10 and ubiquinol and phosphatidylserine, and empty capsules for the same run are covered in our HPMC capsule guide.

Frequently asked questions
1. Is there an official purity standard for NMN raw material?
We found no monograph for NMN in the Japanese Pharmacopoeia, 19th edition. The purity figure therefore comes from the supplier’s own method, usually by liquid chromatography, so ask for the method, the basis and the reference material behind it.
2. Why do two suppliers’ purity figures not match?
They may measure different things: an area percentage of detected peaks, or an assay by weight against a reference standard, on an as-is or anhydrous basis. Ask each supplier for the same three details before you compare.
3. Can NMN be used in foods in Japan?
Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare lists β-nicotinamide mononucleotide among substances not judged to be medicines unless a medicinal effect is claimed. That decides its treatment in Japan only; label wording and amounts are separate questions.
4. Can NMN be sold as a supplement ingredient in my country?
That depends on the country, and NMN’s status has changed in some markets. The manufacturer confirms the current rule in the country of use. We supply the specification, CoA, SDS, production route and origin information the check relies on.
5. Which HS code applies to NMN raw material?
Your customs authority decides. As one reference point, Tokyo Customs classified a chemically single β-NMN for food and cosmetic raw material use under heading 29.34 in February 2026. Give your customs broker the specification and SDS and confirm the code in your own tariff.
