Undenatured type II collagen is one of the smallest doses in the joint-health category — commonly 40 mg a day, against the multi-gram doses used for hydrolysed collagen peptide. Brands abroad ask for it because it lets a joint-support product sit in a single small capsule rather than a daily sachet.

This guide is for brand owners planning an undenatured type II collagen product made in Japan. It covers what the human trials show, how the ingredient differs from collagen peptide, how it is usually formulated, and what to fix before asking for a quotation.

Health supplements are foods, not medicines, and are not a substitute for medical treatment. Nothing here is a claim that any product prevents, treats or cures a disease.

What the research shows

Small randomised trials in both healthy adults and people with knee osteoarthritis report improved knee flexibility, range of motion or symptom scores with 40 mg of undenatured type II collagen a day, and most of this evidence base is industry-funded.

StudyDesignReported result
Randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition 2013;10:48 (PMID 24153020)55 healthy adults with exercise-related knee discomfort; 40 mg/day for 120 daysGreater knee extension than placebo (81.0° vs 74.0°, p=0.011) and longer exercise time before joint discomfort onset
Randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, Journal of Integrative and Complementary Medicine 2022;28(6):540–548 (PMID 35377244)96 healthy adults with joint discomfort on a step-down test; 40 mg/day for 24 weeksGreater improvement in knee range of motion (flexion and extension) than placebo; larger gains in participants over 35
Randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, Journal of Experimental Orthopaedics 2022;9:123 (PMID 36562843)101 adults with knee osteoarthritis; 40 mg/day for 12 weeks, compared with placebo and with glucosamine plus chondroitinStatistically significant reduction in WOMAC total score from week 4 onward, comparable to the glucosamine and chondroitin group

Three points to keep in view:

  • Dose. All three trials used the same 40 mg/day dose. Other amounts have not been studied to the same extent.
  • Funding. All three trials were funded by an ingredient manufacturer, and in two of them a study author was an employee of that manufacturer. This is common in this ingredient category. Read the funding line of any study you plan to cite.
  • Population. One trial studied adults with diagnosed knee osteoarthritis. That is a fact about the research population, not something to carry into a product claim.

What Japanese products say

In Japan, undenatured type II collagen has been notified under the Foods with Function Claims system for supporting knee joint flexibility and range of motion, and for everyday knee movements such as climbing stairs or standing up.

Under this system, the business that notifies the product is responsible for the scientific evidence behind the stated function, and submits it to the Consumer Affairs Agency before sale. The Japanese wording describes everyday knee movement and flexibility, not a medical condition, and does not name osteoarthritis or any other disease.

Two lessons for a brand abroad:

  • The Japanese wording stays close to the trial outcomes — flexibility, range of motion, everyday movement — rather than broader joint-pain language.
  • A Japanese notification is a Japanese mechanism for products sold in Japan. Your label abroad follows your own market’s rules.

Wording that stays on safe ground

Describe undenatured type II collagen by the dose and outcome studied, never by a disease it would treat.

Safer wordingWording to avoid
”Studied for knee flexibility and comfort during activity”Names of joint diseases, or “treats” or “reverses” arthritis
”Contains 40 mg undenatured type II collagen per serving""Clinically proven” without naming the study and its limits
”Sourced from chicken cartilage” for dietary disclosureImplying equivalence to hydrolysed collagen peptide

How undenatured type II collagen is formulated

A 40 mg dose is small enough to sit in a single small capsule or tablet, which is why it is rarely offered as a powder or drink.

Dosage formWhy brands choose itWhat to weigh up
Hard capsuleSmall, single daily dose, low cost per servingSimplest match to the trial dose
TabletCompact, easy to combine with other joint ingredientsFiller needed to reach a workable tablet size at 40 mg active
Combined joint formulaPaired with glucosamine, chondroitin or collagen peptide in one packEach companion ingredient needs its own check against Japanese food law

Decisions that shape the specification:

  1. Source. Undenatured type II collagen for foods is commonly produced from chicken sternum cartilage, processed under controlled, low-heat conditions to keep the collagen’s native (undenatured) structure. Ask the supplier for the production method and the confirmed native collagen content.
  2. Amount per serving. Match the amount to the studies above — 40 mg/day is the dose with the most trial support.
  3. Distinguish it from collagen peptide. Undenatured type II collagen is a different ingredient from hydrolysed collagen peptide, dosed at a fraction of the amount and proposed to work through a different mechanism. The two are not interchangeable in a formula or in your marketing copy; see our collagen peptide guide for how that ingredient is dosed and studied.
  4. Companion ingredients. Undenatured type II collagen is often combined with glucosamine, chondroitin or hyaluronic acid in joint formulas. Every ingredient in such a formula needs its own check against Japanese food law.
  5. Your market’s status for the ingredient. Confirm its status as a food ingredient in your target markets before you commit to a formula.

The check that comes first

Every ingredient must be permitted in foods in Japan, or a Japanese factory cannot make the product.

Undenatured type II collagen itself is established in Japanese foods. Companion ingredients in a combined joint formula are where a check most often turns up a problem. See the Japan-made supplement OEM page, and compare with our glucosamine and collagen peptide guides if you plan a combined formula.

Before you ask for a quotation

A factory can quote accurately once the dose, the form, the companions and the packaging are fixed.

  • Undenatured type II collagen amount per serving and servings per pack
  • Dosage form
  • Companion ingredients and their amounts
  • Packaging
  • Countries you will sell in, and the ingredient’s status there
  • First order and annual volume

Frequently asked questions

1. How much undenatured type II collagen do trials use?
40 mg a day. Every trial with published results that we reviewed used this dose, in periods ranging from 12 to 24 weeks.

2. Is undenatured type II collagen the same as collagen peptide?
No. Collagen peptide is hydrolysed collagen dosed in grams. Undenatured type II collagen keeps its native structure and is dosed in milligrams. They are studied differently and are not interchangeable in a formula.

3. Where does undenatured type II collagen come from?
It is commonly produced from chicken sternum cartilage, processed under low-heat conditions to preserve its native structure.

4. Who funds undenatured type II collagen research?
Mostly ingredient manufacturers. The three trials with published results reviewed here were all industry-funded, and in two of them a study author was an employee of the funder. Check the funding statement of any study you cite.

5. Can undenatured type II collagen be combined with glucosamine or chondroitin?
Yes, and one trial compared it directly with a glucosamine-and-chondroitin combination. Every companion ingredient still needs its own check against Japanese food law.
